Sustainable Future For Mattresses
Leading Sydney recycler WSN Environmental
Solutions and Dreamsafe Recycling are helping Sydney residents reduce their
carbon footprint, collecting unwanted mattress and bases from WSN’s network
of waste management centres for recycling and re-use.
The mattress and base collection and
recycling service prevents mattress and bases from being landfilled and
recovers several resources, including wood, metal from coil springs and
foam.
Mattresses that are in good condition
are cleaned and sanitised and sent to charities including The Salvation
Army and St. Vincent de Paul by Dreamsafe.
The wood recovered from unwanted or
damaged mattresses is sent to WSN’s Chullora Recycling Centre for composting
and biofuel production, while the coil springs are melted down and on-sold
to manufacturers for a variety of uses. The foam is recycled to make underlay.
WSN Environmental Solutions CEO Ken
Kanofski said the service is another example of WSN’s efforts to extract
the highest possible resource value from household items.
“Sydney residents are becoming increasingly
conscious of their environmental footprint and they want to see that nothing
is wasted when they dispose of unwanted household goods,” Mr Kanofski
said.
“Mattresses have for many years posed
a problem for the waste industry as they cannot be compacted and take up
valuable space in landfill.
“WSN’s joint recycling service with
Dreamsafe means that mattresses are kept out of landfill and the recovered
resources can help the manufacturing sector in its ongoing quest to reduce
reliance on raw materials.”
Residents can drop off their unwanted
mattresses at WSN’s facilities at Artarmon, Auburn, Belrose, Chullora,
Eastern Creek, Rockdale, Ryde, Seven Hills and Jacks Gully (Macarthur)
at a cost of $20 per mattress. For further information, phone WSN Environmental
